Curriculum organisation

At Holy Cross we have adopted an integrated approach to delivering the curriculum. For example, the curriculum begins from and capitalises on what is of interest, relevant and significant to children. It integrates the thinking and learning styles of the children, with the curriculum experiences provided.

We emphasise learning experiences which help children make connections between existing and new knowledge, skills, processes, attitudes and values. The curriculum starts from where the children are, and allows them to learn in a meaningful context – providing time and opportunities for them to make their own connections, in their own way. Emphasis is placed on learning experiences which help children make connections between existing and new knowledge, skills, processes, attitudes and values.

We have general year long themes, broken down into a number of units, which are integrated across the Key Learning Areas, using a multiple intelligence approach. This integrated thematic approach allows children to learn within real life contexts. In the Language/Linguistic component of the curriculum, children acquire basic skills in language – listening, speaking, reading, writing – as well as managing and communicating information.

In the Logical Mathematical and Visual Spatial components, children will learn and appreciate basic mathematical relationships and operations, together with logic, probability and problem solving techniques.

In the Life Skills component (Interpersonal/Intrapersonal), children will acquire knowledge and skills related to conflict resolution, teamwork, time management, leadership and many other skills.

The Arts component of the curriculum (Musical/Rhythmic) focuses on music, visual arts, dance and drama, while the Bodily Kinaesthetic component is about the active participation in sport, games, activities and in life generally.

Our aim at Holy Cross is to enable learners to develop their individual potential and acquire the skills, attitudes and values needed to make a positive contribution to a healthy society and a prosperous, sustainable economy.

The learning environment of each classroom is organised so that children make connections between the curriculum and their own lives, and experiences based on Gospel values and the Catholic tradition.
